The Hand Gun Storage Dilemma

The Hand Gun Storage Dilemma

Hand guns happen two ways. You either have one that ends up in the nightstand drawer, or they multiply like rabbits. The problem when they multiply is, of course, how to store and organize them in such a way that they are easily accessible and do not get damaged.

We are going to operate on the assumption that you already have some type of secure storage facility, such as a gun safe.  Depending on where you live, laws pertaining to the security and custody of hand guns vary tremendously. However, as hand guns proliferate, and people continue to have babies, as a simple matter of common sense, hand guns need to be stored in a child proof storage container. Herein lies one of the challenges to storage and organization. The typical gun vault is designed with a lower section that accommodates long guns and then a shelf that transverses the width of the vault about 12-15” from the top. What invariably transpires is that first one, then two, then three hand guns are put on the shelf, which is usually covered in some type of dense cushioning fabric. This does not present any type of problem as the guns are separated from each other and are on a finish friendly surface. However, when more and more guns are introduced into this scenario, they invariably end up touching each other, and maybe even are piled up on top of each other.

There are numerous organizing devices on the market, but with the exception of the Hyskore 30277 Modular Hand Gun Rack, all of these organization devices are fixed. In other words, no adjustment is possible. They are what they are and you have to live with the spacing between guns, the height above the shelf etc., etc. Many times this is in conflict with the available space and your individual preferences. On the other hand, the Hyskore Modular Hand Gun Rack https://hyskore.com/products/30277-6-gun-eva-pistol-rack/ fits flush on the shelf, and can accommodate 6 single or double stacked magazine pistols such as Colt model 1911’s, Glocks, Smith and Wesson, or Sigs in a compact    11” x 7 ½” x 6” footprint. In the event that you also own revolvers, which due to the diameter of the cylinder require a wider space to be properly supported, this pistol rack can be disassembled and then reassembled to, for example, accommodate 4 single or double stacked pistols and 1 large frame (like a Smith and Wesson model 629) revolver. There is no other product on the market that offers this degree of flexibility. Going beyond that, the interior width of your vault is fixed and depending on the number of guns that you have, or intend to acquire, it is desirable to maximize the space utilization on that shelf. Coming to the rescue once again is the Hyskore Modular Pistol Rack which can be disassembled and then reassembled with additional 30277 Pistol Racks to fill the space absolutely perfectly.

To reset and reorganize the Hyskore Pistol Rack is a fairly simple process. It requires 3/16” threaded rod, 3/16” washers, and 3/16” hex nuts. The first step is to disassemble your pistol racks. This is accomplished by removing the circlips on the three nylon rods that hold the rack together, and then deciding which guns are going where, set the width that each gun will occupy accordingly. This can be done by the addition or subtraction of some of the segments from which the rack is constructed. The rack has three different types of segments. One that forms the end panel and the partitions between each gun, one that forms the lower portion of the slot where the muzzle goes, and then two others that will flank the muzzle defining the space where the gun fits. Sorting these as required is fairly simple. At that point it is only a matter of inserting 3 of the threaded rods, assembling to the exact width that you require, fitting a washer to each end of the rods then tightening the hex nut. In short, it is the perfect hand gun storage solution for a vault top shelf. Each gun can have it’s own home.

Of course in gun vaults that have been specially designed for hand guns, and therefore have multiple shelves, this process can be repeated for each shelf, and conceivably can end up being 3-4 racks deep assuming you have a large number of guns. The Hyskore racks are constructed from closed cell moisture, lubricant, and solvent resistant ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA) which has a soft suede like feel, and is compatible with all gun finishes. They are easily the most popular hand gun storage and organizing fixture in the country.
