The Hyskore 30088 DLX Shooting Rest

How to sight in heavy recoil rifles- Use the Hyskore 30088 DLX Shooting Rest

If you are sighting in anything from a 270 up through 375 H & H, the DLX is the perfect piece of equipment. In addition, Turkey guns have a bit of a kick The DLX makes the job of testing the pattern painless.

If you feel a need for recoil resistance somewhere in between the damper and no damper, spring packs can be purchased directly from Hyskore. To use the springs simply remove the lock nuts on the shaft, insert the spring, and tighten the lock nut. The spring pack comes with a selection of six springs providing from two to eight pounds of progressive resistance per inch of travel. If you want to order the spring pack, it’s Hyskore part number 30028.

Unlike rests, you have to load up with a lot of weight. When the gun fires in this rest, the whole upper carrier with the gun moves back against the resistance of the compression damper guided in a straight line by these guides, and then at the end of the firing cycle the gun moves forward and returns the battery and puts your right on target for the next shot.

Over the last several hundred years of gun manufacturing, gun manufacturers have figured out that in order for a gun to maintain its structural integrity and not fall apart, it’s important that the shooters shoulder absorb a certain portion of the recoil. Recoil gets transferred to the stock at one of several places, typically where the recoil lug is, also where the tang meets the stock, and on heavy recoiling guns like a 375 H&H there is also a cross bolt.

The rest uses compression dampening technology to gradually and progressively absorb the recoil in a manner similar to your shoulder. In order to maximize repeatability it’s important that the gun is properly secured in the rest and doesn’t move around. To do that use the two pairs of cleats and the two web Velcro straps. To precisely position the rest, use the two cant adjustments, and the magnetic back spirit level. Take note of the bench grip arm. This transfers recoil from the rest to the bench. To put it in a storage position, remove the screws, invert the grip arm, and put it back into place.

To get the best results from any of our compression dampening rests, and maximize repeatability, you need have a rock solid bench that is not going to move around, and you need to screw the rest down to the bench top. Many times that’s not possible because the bench is concrete, or you go to a public range and are not allowed to do that. In that situation we’ve included instructions both on our website, and with the rest, for building a bench top platform that you’ll be able to clamp down to almost any bench top.

In order to get the gun dialed in and right on target, the rest comes equipped with a fine elevation adjustment right under the butt socket, and the windage adjustment can be operated either from the left side or the right side.
